Caloundra (almost) takes the cake!

Leading travel site WOTIF this week released its top 10 Australian holiday towns for 2022. Its statistics show, 88% of Aussies plan to travel this year, with 71% keen to go interstate. While Launceston Tasmania took out the win, the Sunshine Coast’s Caloundra came in at a hot second.

The yearly awards are determined by Wotif’s data index that looks at accommodation affordability, quality, and traveller satisfaction. The aim is to highlight the best of Australia’s diverse destinations to encourage people to explore their own backyard.

So what’s so special about Caloundra?

Well, according to Wotif “With six excellent beaches to enjoy, the coastal town of Caloundra is a paradise for swimmers and surfers alike. There’s kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing too, as well as great cafes for when you feel like a bite. If you love a good market, don’t miss the Caloundra Street Fair.”

While we can’t deny Caloundra is all of those things, from a livability and investment point of view, it also has a lot more to offer!

Caloundra CBD is currently undergoing a major revitalisation. It’s all about encouraging new investment in the area and increasing opportunities for commercial and residential development. As part of this Sunshine Coast Council is targeting a range of businesses and industries including:

• cultural and creative industries
• tourism activities and facilities (including hotel operators)
• regional sport and recreation activities
• educational industries
• health care and well being, specialising in aged and disability care
• residential and commercial developers
• professional services
• transport and aviation-related activities

Concept designs are being finalised to create a space where arts, community, and creativity come alive.

The proof this is working is in the investment that a number of development companies have already made. From Kings Beach to Bulcock Street a range of residential and commercial buildings are already in the works. Not to mention the massive Caloundra South project, otherwise known as Aura, that will eventually be home to around 50,000 people and is the largest master-planned community in Australia’s history.

On top of all this, Caloundra is also perfectly placed to take full advantage of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. If you’re driving you have easy access to the Bruce Highway, and it’s also anticipated a rail system will link directly to the town making the journey even more streamlined by the time the South East Queensland games are held.

While it often comes in third place to other Sunshine Coast regions such as Noosa or Mooloolaba, this new accolade is proof Caloundra still has it, and it’s only up from here!
