The $1.87 billion, state-of-the-art Sunshine Coast University public hospital is set to open at Birtinya in April 2017. Mal Cayley, Managing Director of Investor Property says the project will undoubtedly boost the Sunshine Coast economy and increase property prices in the area.

“Being such a major project, the hospital will attract hundreds more staff to the area, and anchor a health campus featuring a co-located 200-bed private hospital run by Ramsay Health Care, and a new Sunshine Coast Health Institute,” he says.

“It will also allow an extra 10,000 patients to be treated locally each year rather than travelling to Brisbane.”

On an 8-hectare site near the a future Town Centre, rumoured to commence construction in 2017, the hospital will have links to public transport and community facilities and will have 3500 car parks and a 100-place childcare centre.

“Many retail and food outlets have already opened in the area, with more coming online all the time,” he says.

The Sunshine Coast Health Institute is a joint venture with two universities and a college of TAFE, is one of the least understood but most significant aspects of the entire project. The teaching hospital is one of the largest health projects in Queensland and of comparable size to a city hospital. It will feature a comprehensive cancer centre, specialised medical, surgical and maternity services, an emergency department, mental health unit, renal service, outpatient clinics and other services.

“This will mean that not only will medical practitioners and allied health professionals require accommodation close to their new place of work, so will 100s of medical students per year.”
