What is shaping the future of our region?

Three key factors that bring people to a region are lifestyle, economy, and jobs. It’s pretty obvious the Sunshine Coast has lifestyle in the bag, but thanks to billions of dollars of infrastructure projects funded by the private and public sectors the region is expanding at an unprecedented level, catapulting our economy and job growth.

It’s because of this the Sunshine Coast is now the most exciting region in Australia to invest in, so let’s take a look at the 4 game-changing projects shaping the future of our region:

1. SUNSHINE COAST HEALTH PRECINCT

The largest health precinct in the Southern Hemisphere brings with it access to services only previously provided in the state capital. The precinct incorporates Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, and Sunshine Coast Health Institute. It’s also adjacent to the Health Hub (a 17-hectare area where all land uses support the functioning of the hospitals) and Birtinya Town Centre.

Benefits of the precinct:
● Jobs – The health precinct already employs more than 6,000 people – a number that’s expected to grow to 15,000.
● Access – It affords all potential residents the ability to choose the Sunshine Coast regardless of their medical needs and also provides exceptional.
● Education – Top-class facilities for training as well as medical research.

The boom of this precinct has also propelled other health organisations to base themselves in our region including Vitality Village, MediFarm (Australia’s first licensed medicinal cannabis cultivation, production, and manufacturing facility), and Wandi Nerida (Australia’s first residential eating disorder facility).

2. SUNSHINE COAST AIRPORT

In June 2020 (while overseas travel was halted due to COVID-19) Sunshine Coast Airport officially opened its new $334 million international runway. The wider and longer runway means our region can now open its skies to large passenger aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and the Boeing 787. In the next two decades, a further $200 million will also be invested in the airport to develop new infrastructure such as an upgraded terminal and dedicated freight facility. Once carrier deals are made, the Sunshine Coast will be even more accessible to millions across the globe.

Of course, this isn’t just about tourism and the people sitting on these flights, it’s also about what can also go inside the planes. Having an international airport increases the region’s ability to export goods and services across the globe – a direct benefit that’s estimated to be more than $4 billion.

3. MAROOCHYDORE CBD

No longer a sleepy surf town, the Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia. Over time the Coast has had multiple ‘business centres’ but not a true heart – until now. Maroochydore is the first ‘greenfield’ CBD in Australia. It has been designed for the 21st century, breaking new ground with its extensive use of technology to create a cleaner, greener, more liveable, dynamic city centre.

The CBD will deliver more than 65,000m2 of office space and more than 4,000 apartments. Combined with a university campus, convention centre, links to mass transit and the new Sunshine Coast Airport, it is estimated to provide a boost of more than $4 billion directly to the economy, plus drive further economic growth across the region including more than 30,000 new jobs.

4. INTERNATIONAL BROADBAND CABLE

Connected directly to Maroochydore CBD is one of our region’s biggest game-changers – Queensland’s first international data and telecommunications cable. The Sunshine Coast is the only regional city in the world to have its own cable connection and prior to this Sydney and Perth were Australia’s only connection points.

So what does this mean? If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s the importance of access to fast and reliable data. This network means the Coast has the fastest connection point from eastern Australia to Asia. It’s expected to attract leading investment and commerce businesses from across the globe who rely on superior telecommunications infrastructure. It means our region could soon be home to industries that don’t exist today.

An important thing to remember is these major projects all happened before it was announced the 2032 Olympics will be held in South East Queensland. Now, the opportunities are endless. The infrastructure coming to the Sunshine Coast to accommodate the Olympics will be phenomenal and will trigger even more jobs and growth for the region. Due to our unique positioning with the international broadband cable, it also means we are perfectly placed for media broadcasting.
